We have been learning about the variety of industries that exist within an economy. The students were to talk to their parents regarding their line of employment and then classify it as belonging to the primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary or quinary sector(s). Through class discussions, we rationalized that most jobs today can belong to more than one type industry. It was concluded that the majority of student's parents belong to the tertiary sector.

Pay It Forward
Introducing the Wave of Charity. The heart is the natural symbol for the third year of the TCDSB's three-year pastoral plan focusing on Faith, Hope and Charity. St. John the Evangelist has adopted the Pay It Forward campaign. This is where acts of kindness can spread exponentially and create a more positive environment. The grade 8 students should be brainstorming a class initiative that will spread kindness, either locally or globally, that we will commit to.
MADD
On Thursday January 8th, 2015 a representative from MADD came into the school to talk about the unfortunate reality of drinking and driving. MADD Canada’s mission statement is "to stop impaired driving and to support victims of this violent crime". The assembly consisted of an open discussion on this topic and a re-enactment video. The scary facts are that on average, 4 Canadians are killed and 175 are injured every day in Canada and that approximately 65,000 Canadians are impacted by impaired drivers annually. For more information see http://www.madd.ca/madd2/
Health
We continue to study the topic of Substance Use and Abuse for our Health unit. The students have collaborated in defining what a drug is and categorized certain drugs as stimulants, depressants and hallucinogens. We have brainstormed the negative consequences of substance use and healthy alternatives to using it. The students were responsible for reflecting on certain bible verses, and connecting the overall theme within the bible verse to this topic.

Spirit Week Festivities Continued...
What creativity, planning and collaboration displayed during 2 particular days this past week. For our classes Christmas stocking decorating day, we transformed the stocking into Santa's face. For going over and beyond the expectation our class won the most creative stocking. Similarly, during the Gingerbread House Competition, the grade 8s displayed enthusiasm when constructing Santa's tree house. Although the tree house was not edible, it certainly used a lot of natural resources to showcase a different take on the traditional gingerbread house. Congratulations are in order for Mrs. D. Del Zotto's grade 7/8 class for winning this competition. What spirit the intermediate division has!
